 In
January 1999, following the smash success of Laura's first book, "Take Yourself to the Top: The Secrets of America's #1
Career Coach", Laura was invited to be the first-ever life coach to appear
on The Oprah Winfrey Show!
The program, entitled "What
could you give up?", spoke to Oprah's viewers about their New Year's
Resolutions to "give up" something (and how quickly they break
them).
Prior to the broadcast, Oprah asked Laura to meet with four women
who described themselves as overworked, overstressed and overwhelmed. Laura
worked with each of them individually to help them identify the ways in which
they were being fueled by the "adrenaline rush" of the stressors in their
lives, and how they could begin to make changes to stop overbooking themselves.
The women then appeared on the show to talk about how Laura's coaching had
already made a big difference in their lives.
At one memorable point in
the show, an audience member asked Laura about why her coworkers called her a
"control freak" because she "just wanted things done right". Laura's
response...
"When we need to control our environment, it's
because we're a perfectionist...and when we need perfection, it's because we
have a lack of self-acceptance. We need the outside world to reflect perfection
so we know we're perfect. That's why we control it.
We need the outside
world to reflect perfection to tell you you're O.K." ...had
Oprah herself taking notes and saying "Wow, that's good! That's a
quotable!"
